Her Story

When I was a young law student on my first day of internship, I was in a mediation between a school district and a couple who had a child with disabilities in the district. I only knew a little bit about special education law back then and this was my first mediation, so I was intrigued to learn about the case.

The father spoke on behalf of both himself and his wife, because, while he could speak some English, his wife only spoke Spanish. His voice was low and shaking as he told their story.

He explained that for years they tried to get support from the school district for their child, but that for years the district ignored their requests. He described how his wife would call the school, but the school would hang up on her. He continued to describe a chain of other similar issues, one problem after another, with their school. He poured his heart out on the table and he deeply impacted mine. That day, the school district granted the parents everything they asked for.

I felt both heartbroken and riled up hearing about how the district took advantage of this family and neglected them. I also felt inspired by how that father’s courage to tell their story got his family everything they needed for their child. It was in that mediation that I realized I could use my advocacy strengths to help other families. I knew I was in the right place at the right time to discover that helping families was what I was meant to do.

And that’s exactly what I did. Ever since that day, I gathered more experiences, insights, and expertise in special education law to help families in our community. One family after another, I learned about their worlds with their school and their children’s needs, and by the time we finished our work together, their children were in a much stronger position to be able to receive the educations they deserved.

It’s an honor in my life to meet these families and to be a part of their journeys.
